Economic Development
As one of the first coastal opening cities approved
by the state council and a member of Hang-Ja-Hu Hi-Tech
region, remarkable changes have taken place in Shangyu
during the past decades. Great efforts both from the
government and the people of the city were put into
the economic construction as well as various social
undertakings, and notable achievements have been realized.
Shangyu has a solid economic foundation.
With a stable increase in the production of grain,
cotton, oil, tea and farming, forestry, stock raising
and fishery has been promoted. Grapes from Gaibei,
waxberry from Erdu, chestnuts from Xiaguan and tea
from Longpu are famous local special products in Shangyu,
sold to other areas in China and overseas every year.
In 2003, the peasant net income per capita reached
6328 yuan,an increase of 7.76% over the previous year.
Through the last decades¡¯ development since
the reform and opening-up, the industry in Shangyu
has formed a mature system, covering a wide range
of categories. Electric machinery, light textiles
and chemical engineering became the pillar industries
of Shangyu. The construction industry has developed
rapidly, with a total number of 97 high-graded enterprises
engaging in this field now. As the first county-level
city winning an annual output value of more than 20
billion yuan in the construction industry, Shangyu
was granted one of the first ¡°Construction Hometown¡±
by the provincial government. Shangyu also takes an
active part in foreign trade and economic cooperation.
Up to now, there are more than 600 foreign capital
enterprises approved in Shangyu with a total practical
foreign capital of over 400 million US$, mainly from
US, Japan and Virgin Islands. The private economy
in Shangyu has also achieved substantial progress.
11 private enterprises from Shangyu entered the national
top 500, and 5 of them have realized public listing.
Shangyu attaches great importance to the construction
of industrial parks. With more efforts put into the
development of Shangyu Economic Development Zone and
Hangzhou Bay Shangyu New Zone, they have become significant
platforms to accept the foreign investment.
In 2003, the city¡¯s total GDP value reached
17.76 billion yuan RMB, a financial income of 1.408
billion yuan RMB and a total exportation value
of 374 million US$ have been realized. Individually
the proportion of primary, secondary and tertiary
industries in GDP was 10.2% 59.3% and 30.5%
