Culture Development
Shangyu is the cradle of ¡°Yushun¡± culture. The people in Shangyu, even the whole Chinese nation, are proud of Shun the Great. Many cultural sites and names of places in Shangyu are closely related to him. For thousands of years, the people of Shangyu, prudent, industrious and wise, pursuant to the spirits of Yushun-the leader of ancient Chinese clans, have created glorious cultures in Shangyu, demonstrated as its unique traditions, historical sites, and outstanding people.

Since the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC-476 BC) in China¡¯s ancient times, the technology of wine making, porcelain baking, tea making and smelting in Shangyu has been famous throughout the country. Especially in the middle of Shang Dynasty (1562 BC-1066 BC), Zhangzhen Town of Shangyu started to make hard pottery printed with vein by piling up and dragon kiln and blue glazed porcelain, which directly led to the creation of celadon wine cups by Yue Kiln in Xiaoxiantan and made it the birthplace of China¡¯s celadon wares.

Miss. Cao¡¯e, an ancient filial daughter who sacrificed her life in order to save her father, moved the god with her great piety. To remember this dedicated daughter of Shangyu, the Cao¡¯e Temple was built in 151 AD in East Han Dynasty. Lying on the west bank of the Cao¡¯e River, the temple is named as ¡°a palace of sculpture¡±, ¡°an artistic bright pearl in the south of the Yangtze River¡± and ¡°the first temple in the south of the Yangtze River¡±. The copper bells, the weather-beaten eaves and carved colonnades tell people the long history of Shangyu.

In the early 1920s, a group of literary and artistic elites, including Jing Hengyi, Xia Mianzun, Zhu Ziqing, Feng Zikai, Li Shutong, He Xiangning, Ba Ren and so on, gathered and taught in Shangyu Chunhui School by the side of the White Horse Lake. Their cultural activities here made Chunhui the most reputable high school in south China. The school motto ¡°keep pace with the time¡±, put forward by Mr. Jing Hengyi, one of the founders of Chunhui, has become the spirit of contemporary China. And ¡°the White Horse Lake Literature¡±, created by those outstanding men of letters, has also become an important school of the modern Chinese literature.
